AnneMarie's story

“I'm living proof that a breastscreen can save your life”

When I was about 40 my GP found some nobbly little lumps in my breast and I had to have them investigated. Thankfully they turned out to be nothing to worry about. That set me on the path to having regular breastscreens. The experience taught me it was really important. Time went by and it was on my fourth time that I got called to come back. Something wasn't right.

I went in and had an ultrasound and they did the needle biopsy straight away. They were concerned about this tiny, tiny dot.

I had never seen myself as the sort of person to get cancer. I was healthy, incredibly fit and had regular checks. I had even just competed in a world athletic event so I couldn't possibly have cancer. But I did. I had surgery within four or five days. When I got the results it turned out to be that the cancer was a very aggressive, fast growing one. I couldn't believe such a tiny little dot could be so bad.

It's been eight years now and I'm fine. I think I'm meant to be a survivor to tell other women how important it is to have a breastscreen and to regularly check yourself. Even if you have a niggly feeling something is not right, be persistent in checking it out.

Every year I run the Mothers' Day Classic with my daughter because it was around a Mother's Day that my cancer was found. Afterwards I get down on my knees and thank God for being here and for the smart person who found my cancer because it saved my life. That probably sounds a bit dramatic but I can't tell you how grateful I am. I don't take anything for granted in life anymore.

Remember, breast cancer doesn't discriminate. It can happen to anyone. Through early detection and treatment you have a better chance of living a long and fruitful life, like me. I'm living proof that a breastscreen can save your life.
