Jo's story

“My breastscreen gives me a sense of security that everything is okay.”

For some years now I have made a conscious effort to look after myself more. I’m a busy working Mum so I have to. I also favour the notion of prevention rather than treatment. For me, it just makes sense.

Why let things go until you have a bigger problem to deal with. Right? That’s why I try to watch what I eat, go to the dentist for regular check-ups and have my Pap smear when it is due. When I turned 40 and heard BreastScreen Queensland provided free breastscreening for women over 40, I was there!

I don’t dread having my breastscreen because it is not a bad experience. Rather, it gives me a sense of security as it lets me know that everything is okay. My advice to friends is not to over-think it. Screening is just another type of check up.

If there was ever a time that something scary was detected, then I’d hope having kept my screening up to date would allow for early detection and that treatment would be a good option. However, I don’t dwell on the negative or what-ifs. I think we are incredibly lucky to have a free screening program like BreastScreen Queensland and should take good advantage of it.

If I had to choose one thing I like about the service most it would probably be the staff. I’ve met some fabulous people and I like how they really explain everything. You feel informed and clued in to what is going on and I think that’s important.

When it comes to looking after people women always tend to put themselves second, or third or fourth! Accessing BreastScreen is so easy that this is something women can do for themselves without any fuss and I think the reminder letter is just brilliant.
